Need help installing ubuntu-14.10-desktop-i386 using virtualbox on Windows 8.0

I have used Virtualbox for years running Windows XP to support a consulting contract. However, I have tried to install Ubuntu using virtualbox with limited success. I have no problem mounting the distro as a virtual drive and getting through the installation process. However, when I get to the end I have just a portion of a desktop that is in the center of my virtual window. I presume there are borders, a menu and other items that would make the desktop usable, but all I can seen is a brown square that occupies about 1/5 of my virtual window. It's square and looks like the Ubuntu colors, and if I right click on it I get a menu that stays visible for about 3 seconds. I have tried twice now with the same results each time.

Here are the details of my hardware:

I have an HP Pavilion 23, with 6gb ram, AMD A6-4200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics.
I am running Windows 8 (64 bit) with all updates. This is a touch screen system and I have full Windows Touch support

When I create the virtual machine I give it 1.5 gbyte of memory and 12 gbyte for diskspace.

I am using VirtualBox-4.3.22-98236-Win.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have searched the forums, but I haven't found anything that appears to me to be relevant to this particular problem.

Update... for some reason I could not selected Ubuntu-64 on the previous attempts. This time it will let me select 64 bit options. I am trying that now with ubuntu-14.10-desktop-amd64.iso

Thanks in advance.

Rick.
