Panic/Error with VM install of Ubuntu/Mint on macbook pro mid 2009?

I have attempted to install Ubuntu 14.04 as well as have tried to install Linux Mint 17 using virtual box on my macbook pro mid 2009 laptop. the regular splash screen for ubuntu and mint show up normally then, boom! This happens. What is it? What might be the problem? The computer has 4GB ram, 250GB HDD, 2.53Ghz Intel Core two duo, and Nvidia Gforce 9400M 256MB graphics. I set VM to 1.5GB ram, 30GB virtual HDD.

Note: I just ran Linux Mint in "compatibility mode" and it is running fine, however there is a popup that says something along the lines of, "Your system is running without video support, your cpu may be working harder than normal, this mode is best used for testing purposes."

Update: I ended up reading about the noapic option and running trying to run Linux Mint this way. I am assuming it is the same as "compatibility mode" in Linux Mint (same popup about CPU usage came up--mentioning it no graphics acceleration being used." At any rate, I installed Linux Mint during this setting. Everything seems to be working fine now, except on bootup it mentions the whole no graphics acceleration thing...not sure if this is a big deal?

here is the rest of what the screen said after about 3 minutes or so:
