[ubuntu] open-vm-tools conflicting with VMware Workstation tools

Hi,

I recently installed Ubuntu 16.04 as guest on Windows 10 host.
I keep seeing the message that vmware-tools is out of date.
So I tried to update the tools but during installation I got this:

Please manually remove open-vm-tools before installing VMware Tools.
Execution aborted.

So should I remove open-vm-tools and how do I do this?
If I don't then how do I update open-vm-tools?

Why is open-vm-tools part of the Ubuntu installation?

Workstation 12.05 installed.
