difficulty accessing a file in ubuntu

Hi All,

I'm using a software that needs to access some files to run. The software is having difficulty reading a file. Wondering what the best command is to give permission to a directory or all files in a directory in order to have my software access files to run successfully. I'm using a virtual machine in windows and I understand there may be issues with file/folder ownership. I've tried chmod/chown but with no luck.
