Ubuntu 16.04 running in VirtualBox has black screen at start up

For some reason now, whenever I start up Ubuntu 16.04 in VirtualBox, the main screen doesn't automatically come up. I either have to click the mouse several times or change windows and come back to the VirtualBox window to have it appear.

Is there any way to determine why this is happening? The OS is up to date.
