[SOLVED] Xubuntu on VirtualBox: screen looks strange

Any help appreciated.

I'm new to Linux. I installed VirtualBox for Windows, then Xubuntu. It all went fine, as far as I could tell. But when I start Xubuntu, the Xubuntu screen ends up with rows of reddish dollar signs on a green background. Nothing else. Has anyone else seen something like this?
