I'm running Ubuntu 17.10 inside a VirtualBox, Win10 host. It's been working fine for months.
booting hangs at this:
Spectre V2 mitigation: LFENCE not serializing. Switching to generic retpoline
Usually when I boot the VM it goes straight to the Kylin splash screen and then my desktop. Currently boots into Grub, and I can't get anywhere from there. If I try and boot Ubuntu, I get that Spectre V2 mitigation message. If I go into advanced options and try to boot into recovery it acts like it's going to start the advanced option recovery menu, but just hangs. I was able to boot into recovery once, where I went into a root shell and did apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, then attempted do-release-upgrade, but it just hung at "Checking for a newer version of Ubuntu", and then I rebooted.
Also tried Boot-Repair https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

but their machine still seems to boot.
