[ubuntu] Top and left side menu blackened out in ubuntu 12.1 vm on vmware

Please check the attached the screenshot.

The top menu and the left-hand side menu bar are missing for me.

Why is this the case? whats casuing these menus to not appear?

Any help is appreciated.
