I am running an old Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge72.
If I load system setup it shows my license status is Win8 Pro DPK. TPG. Bios Date 12/21/2012.
I have not been using Windows for a while.
I recently downloaded and installed Linux Ubuntu Studio, which is awesome and exactly what I've been looking for. I have installed various distros to this system in the past. They all seem to do okay until I begin updating everything. Once I've completed the newer updates, my system always seems to go crazy.
Well, that's what happened with Ubuntu Studio. I installed it and I used it for several days without updating. I then started updating everything. When the updates were complete it prompts me for Restart which I comply. When it tries to load back up it cannot find my hard drive. It says it cannot find any installation media.
When I load with a live usb stick, I can find the encrypted hard drive, but I cannot copy the files that I am trying to save... I had a lot of data on a USB stick(years worth of stuff), I had to transfer this data to the hard drive in question, because I needed the stick for something pressing. I was going to copy the files back when I was done with the stick. Well, I did that update before I was done using the stick, not thinking that it was going to ruin my system.
Just to make sure it was the update, I installed onto an external hard drive I was using on my xbox. I used it fine. Restarting and starting back up many times. Then I did the update, which led to the exact same problem, except for I don't have any important data on it.
I'm under the impression I'm having issues with hardware compatibility and it's time for me to purchase a new system, but I can't afford that right now. I could do what I don't want to do and put windows back on it. But, I don't like that junk.
I guess my question is am I safe running the install without the updates? Are there critical security updates? If so, are there measures I can take to be safer without those updates? Everything seems to be just fine until the updates are applied, regardless of the distro I use.
