[all variants] Native speed hardware VM?

After some research, I was wondering if there is a native speed, (hardware) virtualization option, that allows bios level functionality--i.e. boot from cd, affect virtual bios, or other power-on options, etc.

While there are some virtual machines that advertise native speeds, they seem to require some form of OS install before booting--so pretty much os virtualization.

If there aren't any that allow native speeds, what are the fastest, open source (GPL) solutions available on x86 hardware--specifically on an x86/linux host virtualizing any other platform/linux combination that will run the quickest? (That might actually be another question, "Which hardware platform/architecture runs what distro the quickest?") At first glance it seems that it should be an x86 VM, but given the number of variables in virtual machines available, and the number of options available to implement them, this is somewhat difficult to tell without actually testing all of them.

Be happy to benchmark a few of these if some testing is required; however, I was hoping to narrow down the number of options beforehand.

Thanks
