[ubuntu] window 7 virtualbox ubuntu 12.10 install issue

Good Morning,

I am a complete newbie to linux (48 hours but a white knuckle 48 hours). Have tried installing Ubuntu 12.10 about 6 times using Virtualbox 4.2.6 from a system 7 host and i keep getting the pink "swirl screen" with no menus or application access.

My host is a new build windows 7 service pack 1
nvidia geforce gtx 660
i5-3570k
64-bit

Install seems to go well every time with updates, and all. I even get some features when i have the option to try on disk or do a full install. but whichever i choose, i loose those menus and am back to the pink screen with nothing.

I do get a message that Compiz had to close.

I am quite exited to get this to boot up and have stuck infront of my computer all weekend, somebody please help.
