[ubuntu] Black bars instead of menus

I installed both 12.04 and 13.04 with VMWare Player and in both cases saw black bars instead of menus. Take a look at the screenshot.

Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this?

Actually, that random section of black on the left sticking out isn't there. For some reason it was for just a second, but it's not there now.
