[ubuntu] Virtualbox menus missing from Windows 7 guest

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 (using gnome-session-fallback and not Unity) with the latest Virtualbox (4.2.12). I have three vm's defined and running. A Windows XP 32-bit (which will probably be going away soon), a Windows 7 32-bit, and an Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit. All three of them run as expected except for the missing virtualbox menu and status line for the Windows 7 vm. They are present for the Windows XP and Ubuntu 13.04 vms, just not the Windows 7 vm. This one looks like the screenshots I have seen of vms started using VBoxSDL, but I have not done so. I want to install some software on the Windows 7 vm, but I cannot get to the VBox menu to "activate" the dvd drive. The Ubuntu host just keeps mounting it. Any ideas how I can get the menus back??

Thanks,

X
