[ubuntu] VNC Server with gnome-core want to put LXDE-core instead

I'm a linux noob and recently got a old HP machine w/ the following specs:

Single-core AMD Anthlon 3200+ I believe 2.0 GHz
512 MB DDR Ram 400Mhz planning to upgrade to max 4 GB
a 1TB HDD
And a 250W PSU

I decided I'd make a headless low power server, with putty but then I realized wait a minute, I barely know Linux I'll need some GUI. So I put gnome-core I think its the gnome fall back stuff and put artwork to make it look nice (couldn't help it), but decided I wanted it lighter with LXDE or open-box I'd copied a guide to set this up in the first place, can someone give me a guide/walk through or type the necessary VNC configs to do this. Or better an easier solution to this that is noob friendly and will run on my machine? I don't see any overheating yet server side, but I do want to keep it light, minimal, and simple. Thanks for any help.
