[ubuntu] New to Virtualization

I will be buying a new PC with Ubuntu 13.04 pre-installed on which I will install classic Gnome. I would like to run windows in a virtual machine. To be sure that we are all on the same page, that means to me that I will be able to run Win7 in a virtual window which I will be able to run either full screen or windowed. What would be my best pick for visualization software. Of course free would be a big plus but if I have to buy something to get the best, I won't rule it out. This is for my home machine. What else do I need to know?
