Ubuntu on virtual machine in retina display

Hello folks,
I recently bought a Macbook Pro 13''. This is my first mac, and well, it has a really good screen. I noticed it more after using it for a while and then coming back to my old computer. Virtual machines in it seem to be fast enough for me, and the first thing I tried was to install ubuntu in it. It runs without problems. I tried virtual box, vmware fusion 6 and parallels (the two in trial, and I'll probably be buying vmware fusion). The thing I don't like is that when it is at full resolution of 2560x1600, everything looks tiny, although well defined. When it is not at such a high-resolution, the sizes are ok, but icons look blurry and pixelated.
I tried to find a workaround online. I spent several hours on this. The best I was able to do was increase the font sizes of the system. Things are readable, but look bad. The icons are still really small. I was wondering if there is any theme for unity (or any other graphical system, as long as it is good for high resolutions). I think if every icon of the system was doubled, instead of YxY pixels use (2Y)x(2Y) pixels, this would not be a trouble, and also for the font size, everything doubled, I think this would work. If I double every font size in ubuntu, things look terrible, because the icons are not in the same size. If they were this would be ok.
Does anyone know of a theme for unity with every icon and text standards larger? I have never tweaked unity before, I only used themes when it was gnome2.
I am open to any other graphical system that I would install and have well sized icons and text, as long as it fits well in high-ppi.
If anyone has succeed using VirtualBox with ubuntu guest in a high-ppi display, let me know.
I may use the linux in virtual machine mainly in the terminal and some programming if things do not work in Mac the way I want or what I want is not supported for Mac officially (as the ROS project).

P.S. I am not sure if this thread would be in virtualization or other section in the forum. I am sorry if this is the case.

Regards,
