I have a win7 64bit amd 8 core pc with a raid1 (2x6tb drives) for Media Center recordings. I know I can't run windows raid 5 in Win 7. BUT I CAN in Win8 or Win 10. I want to replace the 2x6tb raid1 with a 3x3tb raid5. Windows 8/10 do not have a built in way to easily expand a RAID5 (like ubuntu mdadm does). There are 3rd party windows software that do this. Would it be a good idea to install ubuntu 16.04 64bit on the boot SSD 120gb drive, and use mdadm to setup the raid5. THEN setup a a virtual machine for windows 7, and somehow use the mdadm ubuntu raid within the virtual machine, without making a huge 6tb ish virtual drive on top of the linux mdadm. I wanna have the raid5 3x3tb mdadm shared for the windows virtual machine. Is this possible?
